Blue Cheese Burger with Tomato-Shallot Jam

When summer arrives, the grill quickly becomes the center of the kitchen. Warm days and long evenings make it hard to resist cooking outdoors, and while almost anything can be grilled, a great beef burger still has a special place at the table. This blue cheese burger with tomato-shallot jam takes a classic backyard favorite and gives it a bold, savory upgrade.

The beauty of this burger is in the balance. A juicy grilled beef patty brings smoky flavor, the blue cheese adds tangy richness, and the tomato-shallot jam gives every bite a sweet, bright, and slightly savory finish. Instead of using sliced tomatoes or ketchup, this homemade jam concentrates the tomato flavor and pairs beautifully with the char from the grill. It is simple to make, but it gives the burger a more memorable flavor.

French fries are also added directly to the burger. It may sound indulgent, but the crisp texture works perfectly with the soft bun, melted cheese, and jam. You can make fries from scratch if you like, or use prepared fries for an easier meal. Either way, the fries turn this blue cheese burger into a fun, satisfying main dish that feels made for summer weekends.

Blue cheese is especially well suited for burgers because its tangy, creamy character cuts through the richness of the beef. Burger Blue slices are convenient because they melt easily and avoid the crumbly mess that can happen when slicing traditional blue cheese. Added during the final minute of grilling, the cheese softens over the hot patty and creates the flavorful topping that makes this recipe stand out.

This recipe makes 3 to 4 burgers, depending on how large you shape the patties. The tomato-shallot jam makes enough for 6 to 8 burgers, so you may have extra for another cookout. Store the cooled jam in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use it again with grilled meats, sandwiches, or another round of burgers.

Description

Make a memorable grilled blue cheese burger topped with a savory-sweet tomato-shallot jam, lettuce, French fries, and a creamy slice of Burger Blue. It is a hearty summer burger with smoky, tangy, and lightly sweet flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

For the Tomato-Shallot Jam

  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) sugar
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) shallots, minced
  • Juice and zest of 1 lime
  • 1/2 tsp salt

For the Burgers

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 34 slices Burger Blue
  • 34 hamburger buns
  • Lettuce
  • French fries, for serving and topping

Instructions

  1. Make the tomato-shallot jam first. Cut the cherry tomatoes in half and place them in a bowl with the sugar. Toss to combine, then let them sit at room temperature for about 1 hour, stirring once or twice while they rest. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tomatoes, their accumulated juices, and the minced shallots. Cook, stirring frequently, for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the mixture becomes thick and glossy and the tomatoes are nearly broken down. Stir in the lime juice, lime zest, and salt, then cook for another 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. Once cooled, the jam can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days. This batch makes enough for 6 to 8 burgers.
  2. If you are serving the burgers with French fries or adding fries directly to the burger, begin cooking them while the jam cools.
  3. Preheat your grill to high.
  4. Prepare the burger patties. Add the ground beef, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, and about 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and black pepper to a medium bowl. Use your hands to gently combine the ingredients, being careful not to overmix. Shape the mixture into 3 or 4 patties, depending on your preferred burger size. Sprinkle the tops with a little extra black pepper.
  5. Place the burger patties on the hot grill and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred level of doneness. During the final minute of cooking, add one slice of Burger Blue to each patty so it can soften and melt. If desired, place the hamburger buns on the grill at the same time to lightly toast them. Remove the burgers and buns from the grill.
  6. Assemble the burgers. Spread tomato-shallot jam on the bottom half of each bun. Add lettuce, a grilled blue cheese burger patty, French fries, and the top half of the bun. Serve immediately while the burgers are hot and the cheese is soft.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredients do I need to make tomato-shallot jam for a blue cheese burger?

When should I add the blue cheese to the burger?

Add the blue cheese during the final minute of grilling. This gives it enough time to soften and melt slightly without overcooking the burger.

Can I use store-bought French fries for this burger?

Yes. Store-bought fries work well for serving alongside the burger or layering directly on top. Cook them according to the package instructions before assembling the burgers.

How long does the tomato-shallot jam keep?
