Sparkling Black Tea Lemonade Cocktail

I have had the house to myself this week, which has given me a chance to catch up on long-overdue dates with friends, make and eat more salads than one person probably needs, and watch exactly the same television I would have watched anyway. The only difference is that, for once, I do not have to share the couch.

Even though the weather has cooled down a little outside, my apartment still feels impossibly hot inside. Installing the air-conditioning unit in the window is definitely a two-person job, and since I am currently on my own, I have had to rely on a more old-fashioned method of cooling down: a cold drink in a tall glass. More specifically, a sparkling black tea lemonade cocktail with gin, ice, and plenty of lemon.

Ingredients for a black tea lemonade cocktail

Half and halfs, Arnold Palmers, iced tea and lemonade, whatever name you use, the combination is hard to beat. It is tart, sweet, refreshing, and perfect for a warm afternoon. Add gin and a splash of soda water, and it becomes the kind of easy summer cocktail that feels special without requiring much effort.

Fresh lemon for sparkling black tea lemonade

My iced tea habit started early. Growing up, during the rare stretch of August when it was actually warm enough outside, we would make sun tea in the afternoon. My dad would fill a large glass pitcher with water, and I would get to add the tea bags. I was too small to carry the full pitcher out to the deck because it was much too heavy, but I would sit nearby and watch as the dark streaks slowly drifted through the water.

At the time, it felt magical. I could not wait for the tea to be ready, poured over ice, and served cold. Looking back, I can admit that watching sun tea steep is not exactly thrilling. In fact, it may be even more boring than watching paint dry. Apparently, my impatience began at a young age.

Fresh lemon juice for a summer cocktail

That is why this recipe uses black tea cocktail syrup instead. It gives you the deep flavor of black tea without waiting around all afternoon. It also solves the sweetness problem because the sugar is already built into the syrup. Stir a spoonful or two into fresh lemon juice, add gin, ice, and soda water, and you have a sparkling black tea lemonade cocktail that comes together quickly.

I also do not have a deck anymore, and I doubt my downstairs neighbors would appreciate me balancing a glass pitcher of sun tea on the fire escape. A simple syrup made on the stove is much easier, much safer, and much more practical for apartment living.

Gin for a sparkling black tea lemonade cocktail

The black tea syrup has all the flavor you want from iced tea, plus a rich sweetness from brown sugar. It keeps in the refrigerator until you are ready to mix a drink, which makes it ideal for summer cocktails, backyard meals, lazy weekend afternoons, or any moment when plain lemonade feels a little too ordinary.

You can absolutely skip the gin if you want a nonalcoholic version. The lemon, tea syrup, ice, and soda water are refreshing on their own. But this drink does lend itself very naturally to a pour of gin. Just keep in mind that the cocktail is smooth and easy to sip, so the alcohol can hide behind the lemon and tea. You may not taste it right away, but it is still there.

Sparkling Black Tea Lemonade Cocktail Recipe

Makes one cocktail

1 to 2 spoonfuls black tea cocktail syrup
1 lemon
1 ounce gin
3 to 4 ice cubes
Soda water

Cut the lemon in half, then slice off one thin round to use as a garnish. Squeeze the juice from both lemon halves into the bottom of a tall glass. Add one or two spoonfuls of black tea cocktail syrup, depending on how sweet and tea-forward you want the drink to be. Pour in the gin, add the ice cubes, and fill the rest of the glass with soda water. Stir well until everything is combined. Garnish with the lemon slice and serve with a straw, preferably a fancy one.

Black Tea Cocktail Syrup

Makes about one cup

1 cup brown sugar
1 cup water
5 bags black tea

Combine the brown sugar and water in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Remove the saucepan from the heat, add the tea bags, and cover. Let the tea steep for one to two hours, depending on how strong you want the syrup to taste. Discard the tea bags, transfer the syrup to a glass container, and store it in the refrigerator until ready to use.

This sparkling black tea lemonade cocktail is bright, cold, lightly fizzy, and simple to make. It has the familiar flavor of iced tea and lemonade, but the black tea syrup gives it a deeper, richer taste. Whether you add gin or keep it alcohol-free, it is a refreshing drink for warm days, quiet nights at home, or any time your apartment feels far hotter than the weather outside.
