Graduation season is full of celebrations, from preschool and kindergarten promotions to middle school, high school, and college graduations. In Hawaii, giving a lei is one of the most meaningful ways to honor a graduate. It is a warm, joyful tradition used to celebrate milestones, welcome loved ones, and show affection.

Many people who grew up in Hawaii remember graduation day with stacks of fragrant flower lei around their necks. Family and friends arrive with flowers, hugs, and congratulations, and it is not unusual for a graduate to wear so many lei that they can barely see over them. The scent of flowers, the excitement, and even the weight of those heavy carnation lei create memories that last for years.

Fresh flower lei can be harder to find outside Hawaii. Orchid lei are often the easiest option on the mainland, but availability is not always guaranteed, especially during graduation season. Shipping fresh lei can also be expensive. That is why candy lei have become such a practical and popular alternative. They are festive, easy to personalize, and loved by kids and adults alike.

This Kukui Nut Candy Lei combines the classic look of a kukui nut lei with the fun of a chocolate candy lei. Traditional kukui nuts are beautiful and long-lasting, but they may not feel exciting enough for a young graduate. Chocolate truffles wrapped in shiny colors create a similar rounded look while making the lei edible and celebratory.

Choosing Candy for a Kukui Nut Candy Lei

Traditional kukui nuts are commonly seen in black, brown, or blond shades. You can create the same effect with wrapped chocolate truffles. Black wrappers work well for an extra dark chocolate look, brown wrappers resemble natural brown kukui nuts, and gold wrappers can stand in for blond kukui nuts. These candies are often available in grocery stores, drug stores, and seasonal candy displays.

For a child-sized candy lei, use 16 pieces of chocolate. For an adult-sized lei, use 20 pieces. Before wrapping the candy in cellophane, press the wrapper ends down toward each other over the candy. Secure the ends with a small piece of clear adhesive tape. Place the tape over the seam side of the wrapper or over any barcode so the finished lei looks neat.

How to Make the Lei

Placing and tying the truffles in the cellophane

Steps:

1) Cut 17 pieces of curling ribbon for a child lei or 21 pieces for an adult lei. Each piece should be about 8 to 9 inches long.

2) Lay a long strip of clear cellophane horizontally across the table. Use a strip that is 5 inches wide and 48 inches long for a child lei, or 5 inches wide and 56 inches long for an adult lei.

Tip: To measure cellophane more easily, pull out half the needed length, fold the roll back over, and roll back to the starting edge. Cut along the original edge. Keep the cellophane folded and cut 5-inch-wide strips through the double layer.

3) At the left end of the cellophane, fold the top third down and the bottom third up. Pinch the wrap about 1 1/2 inches from the end and tie it with one piece of curling ribbon.

4) Place one prepared truffle into the opening, taped side up, about 1 1/2 inches from the knot. Gently push the truffle close to the knot. Fold the top cellophane edge down first, then fold the bottom edge up. Squeeze the cellophane gently but firmly around the candy and tie it with curling ribbon. Tie it once for now; you will tighten the ribbons later from the front side.

5) Continue adding truffles and tying between each piece. Keep the candies close together, but do not pull so tightly that the cellophane tears. If the cellophane does tear, repair it immediately with clear adhesive tape. A clean repair will not be noticeable and will help prevent the lei from ripping later.

Tying the two lei ends together

6) After the final truffle is in place, tie off the end and trim the extra cellophane, leaving about 1 1/2 inches.

7) Turn the lei over so the front side faces up. Gently rotate any truffles that need adjusting so the best side is visible. Re-tie the ribbons snugly from this side. A full knot is not necessary unless a ribbon feels loose.

8) Curl the ribbon ends carefully, handling the chocolates gently. Leave the ribbons at the two ends uncurled until the lei is joined.

9) Bring the two ends together, overlapping them at the ribbon knots. Tie the ends together twice, using the ribbons from each side. Curl the remaining ribbons and make any final adjustments.

10) Finish the lei by tying an 18-inch piece of black, brown, or cream ribbon into a bow at the joining point. Grosgrain, velvet, or satin ribbon gives the most traditional and polished look.

Ribbon and Supply Ideas

Ribbons

Curled ribbon bows can save time. If you use pre-curled ribbon, you can cut the strands to size and re-curl only the cut ends. Clear adhesive tape, curling ribbon, grosgrain ribbon, and cellophane wrap are common craft supplies and are useful to keep on hand when making several graduation candy lei at once.

You can also create a kukui nut and shell-style candy lei by alternating chocolate truffles with caramel popcorn. From a distance, round caramel popcorn pieces can resemble shells. Ferrero Rond Noir chocolates work well for this style because they do not need special preparation before wrapping.

Caramel Popcorn from Sacramento Sweets Co.

Use round pieces of caramel popcorn that are not too large or crumbly. Smaller individual pieces are easier to wrap neatly and make the finished lei look more even.

Crunch 'n Munch

For each shell section, use two round pieces of caramel popcorn. Wrap them snugly in the cellophane between the chocolate pieces.

Colored Kukui Nut Candy Lei

Various bags colored Lindt Lindor Truffles

Painted kukui nut lei come in many colors and designs, and candy lei can be just as colorful. Wrapped truffles are available in a variety of wrapper colors and flavors, depending on the store and season. Common colors include red, black, gold, dark blue, and light blue, with additional colors often appearing around holidays.

Matching a candy lei to school colors makes it feel personal and special. Green and gold, blue and gold, red and blue, cardinal and white, and other combinations are easy to create by mixing candy wrapper colors with coordinating ribbons.

Blue & Gold, Powder Blue & Gold, and Purple and LIme Green Candy Kukui Nut Leis

If a school has more than two colors, add extra color with additional curling ribbon at each joint. This is a simple way to create a custom graduation lei without needing every candy wrapper to match.

For a bold look, alternate truffle colors around the lei. Repeating color patterns make the lei eye-catching while keeping the construction simple.

Instead of adding a second piece of curling ribbon, you can tie small satin bows at the joints. This creates a dressier look and works especially well for a more decorative graduation candy lei.

Keeping a Chocolate Candy Lei Cool

Because this lei is made with chocolate, it is best for cooler weather, indoor celebrations, or air-conditioned parties. It may melt at a hot outdoor graduation ceremony. If you need to transport it in warm weather, place the lei in a plastic bag and carry it in an insulated lunch bag with a couple of ice packs.

After the lei has been worn and enjoyed, the truffles can still be used. Cut them up and add them to a chocolate cake or another dessert. It is a graduation lei that keeps celebrating even after the ceremony is over.
